Just after 7:00am this morning, firefighters responded to a fire at 1744 East 75th Street. While checking to if there were any people trapped in the building, a wall collapsed trapping four firefighters. Two of the firefighters died, the other two along with seventeen others were hospitilized.
This afternoon woman of color, many of whom work in the medical profession, marched to the Thompson Center to rally for increased funding of the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program.
Today the Salvation Army broke ground on the new Ray and Joan Kroc Community Center. Among those in attendance were Governor Pat Quinn, Mayor Richard M. Daley, Alderman Carrie M. Austin of the 34th Ward and NBA hall of famer Scottie Pippen.
The community center is expected to be completed in spring 2012.
